Among other anecdotes is the fact that Thornton and his staff ate the scraps off of the plates of Wellington and his officers (Johnson's dictionary--compiled less than fifty years earlier-- contains a word, 'groak' meaning one who stands nearby and watches you eat, hoping there'll be something left over for him!). Quite good.
