Author Name Thornton, James. Title YOUR MOST OBEDIENT SERVANT: JAMES THORNTON, COOK TO THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON. Publisher Exeter 1985 Seller ID 689 12mo, 117pp, many superb plates. Fine in dj. This charming work is very evocative of the social conditions of the time. Among other anecdotes is the fact that Thornton and his staff ate the scraps off of the plates of Wellington and his officers (Johnson's dictionary--compiled less than fifty years earlier-- contains a word, 'groak' meaning one who stands nearby and watches you eat, hoping there'll be something left over for him!). Quite good.
