1 Schroeder, Paul W. THE TRANSFORMATION OF EUROPEAN POLITICS 1763-1848.
Oxford OUP 1994 First Edition
894pp, VG in dj: there is a waterstain to the front board (not visible under dj), affecting front endpapers. A perfectly good working copy. A massive, scholarly work which presents the Empire as an inherently doomed enterprise driven by nothing deeper than Napoleon's insatiable appetite for personal aggrandizement. Interesting fact: the proportion of European citizens who died in war was six times lower (!) in the 19th century than in the 18th, largely because of the new, more stable international political structure which European statesmen were forced to develop in order to cope with Napoleonic aggression. This book is also a fascinating example of how games theory and Darwinism are moving to center stage in political science. Highly recommended and Very Scarce
