1 Giles, Frank. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE: ENGLAND'S PRISONER THE EMPEROR IN EXILE 1816-1821.
New York Carroll & Graf 2001 First Am edition
xviii+206pp. Many illustrations. Fine in dj. Giles, a distinguished reporter and author of several books on French history and politics, brings a decidedly fresh eye to the St. Helena episode. Many of his sources and quotes are little known and quite telling, as this from a Lt. Bowerbank aboard the Bellerophon: 'Upon his [Napoleon] quitting the gangway, many of the spectators cheered. Being close to him I immediately fixed my eyes on him and marked the workings of his countenance. I plainly perceived that he was moritified and displeased and not a little agitated, attributing the shout--and I believe justly--to the exultation which they felt at having him in our possession. After he retired, we were told that he had taken ill.' I really liked this book!
