1 Fouche, Joseph. MEMOIRS OF JOSEPH FOUCHE, DUKE OF OTRANTO, MINISTER OF THE GENERAL POLICE OF FRANCE.
New York Merrill and Baker 1894 'Connossieur Series'
From the series 'Courtiers and Favorites of Royalty.' vii+474pp, 3 plates. Fine original 1/2 morocco, marbled boards and eps Gilt designs to spine. Although clearly ghosted, most recent scholarship has tended to uphold the authenticity of these memoirs. 'He commenced his career as a revolutionist; voted the death of the king; betrayed the Republic to Napoleon; broke his faith to the usurper, then to the Bourbons; then again to the hero of the Hundred Days; he was venal, mendacious, disloyal, corrupt to the core; and all this he carefully points out to his readers 'in the spirit of candour.' His memoirs are indeed no less amazing than instructive reading, and in them will be found the history of the first Napoleonic Empire with a cynical frankness little less than revolting.'--Daily Telegraph

2 Fouche, Joseph. MEMOIRS RELATING TO FOUCHE, MINISTER OF POLICE UNDER NAPOLEON I.
New York Sturgis and Walton 1912 First edition thus
315pp, illus., vg+ decorated plum cloth, spine very slightly faded. This edition of Fouche's memoirs is titled 'Memoirs Relating To Fouche' because Fouche's notes had been touched up by Alphonse de Beauchamps. Their authenticity and historical value are no longer seriously questioned. 'He commenced his career as a revolutionist; voted the death of the king; betrayed the Republic to Napoleon; broke his faith to the usurper, then to the Bourbons; then again to the hero of the Hundred Days; he was venal, mendacious, disloyal, corrupt to the core; and all this he carefully points out to his readers 'in the spirit of candour.'
