Napier fought in the Peninsula, and spent 16 years researching and writing his masterpiece. His wife even broke King Joseph's secret code--a feat Wellington said would have been worth 20,000 to him during the war. The historian G.P. Gooch echoed the opinions of many when he called this work 'Perhaps the finest military history in English or any other language.'
