2 Herold, J. Christopher. MISTRESS TO AN AGE: A LIFE OF MADAME DE STAEL.
New York Bobbs-Merrill Co. 1958 First edition
500pp, illus. VG in torn dj. De Stael has been called 'The first woman of Europe in her time.' She was intelligent, cultured, and sometimes pompous and self-important. Napoleon found her meddlesome and annoying, and loved to deflate her ego; once, when she was bending his ear in a reception line, he stopped in front of her, looked at her breasts, and asked 'did you nurse your children?' Well worth reading.
