1 Campbell, Sir Neil. NAPOLEON ON ELBA: DIARY OF AN EYEWITNESS TO EXILE.
Welwyn Garden City Ravenhall Books 2004 First edition
206pp, illus., as new in dj. This book is the only primary source we have for the Elban episode which is continuous, contemporary, and dated. Campbell was the British Commissioner who accompanied the fallen Emperor from Fontainebleau to Elba, and remained as ranking Allied officer on the island. In addition to a moving eyewitness account of Napoleon's farewell to his guard at Fontainebleau, Campbell describes long, searching conversations with the Emperor on a wide variety of subjects : 'I saw before me a short, active-looking man, who was rapidly pacing the length of his apartment, like some wild animal in his cell...enlarging for some time upon the influence which he possessed over the minds of French soldiers in the field, he said that under him they performed what no other chief could obtain from them. This he ascribed to his manner of talking to them...he raised himself on his toes, looked up to the ceiling, and, lifting one of his hands to its utmost extent, called out 'Unfurl the Eagles! Unfurl the Eagles!'...there was something wild in his air...' One of the most valuable Napoleonic memoirs, outstanding for its intimacy and objectivity.
