1 Seaton, R.C. NAPOLEON'S CAPTIVITY IN RELATION TO SIR HUDSON LOWE.
London George Bell & Sons 1903 First edition
271pp, vg+ gilt cloth, a nice copy. A valuable corrective to the absurd legend of Napoleon on St. Helena as martyr. 'Soon after the death of Napoleon, a small but noisy group, aided by political interest, party spite, and the specious statements of a lying book [O'Meara], captured the ear of the public with their version of the treatment of the Emperor at St. Helena. They have largely kept it ever since.' Sir Hudson Lowe emerges as a decent if unimaginative officer with orders to follow, and given the unenviable task of guarding one of the world's most aggressive and petulant personalities. Very scarce & highly recommended.
