54 Bausset, L.F.J. PRIVATE MEMOIRS OF THE COURT OF NAPOLEON...FROM 1805-1814.
Philadelphia Carey, Lea & Carey 1828 First Am edition
434pp. Handsomely rebound in a 1/4 cloth limited editions binding. Contents fine. Bausset was Napoleon's Prefect of the Palace. His memoirs are among the least known of the period, singled out by many historians (Cronin, Tulard, etc.) for their interest and objectivity. An excellent administrator, one of Bausset's less enviable duties was to read Napoleon the headlines from foreign newspapers--which often provoked apoplectic rages in the Emperor. An excerpt: 'On the morning of that day [Borodino], so fatal and so glorious to the French Army, some bullets passed over the head of Napoleon and the group behind him, in which we were. He ordered General Sorbier to advance some batteries of artillery to protect us from them. Two hours later they appeared again, and we feared for a moment that the enemy had recovered his ground. By degrees the enemy's firing abated, and the expiring bullets rolled and stopped at Napoleon's feet, who gently pushed them away as a person would remove a stone in his path.' Especially important is Bausset's account of the events at Bayonne in 1808, leading to the deposition of the Spanish royal family. Hostile historians (Duff Cooper, et. al.) have often cited this episode as evidence of the Emperor's inherent perfidy: Napoleon cunningly lured the Bourbons into France, intending from the outset to replace them with his brother Joseph. According to Bausset, they simply showed up unannounced to ask Napoleon's mediation, and then self-destructed in petty quarreling among themselves--much to Napoleon's amazement and disgust. Exceptionally scarce and valuable.
