Anglesey. ONE-LEG: THE LIFE AND LETTERS OF HENRY WILLIAM PAGET, FIRST MARQUESS OF ANGLESEY, K.G., 1768-1854. New York Morrow 1961 First Edition 428pp, illus. Fine in lightly scuffed dj. Paget had a long, distinguished career as a diplomat, and was one of the best cavalry commanders of the age. His charge at Mayorga has been described by Oman as 'perhaps the most brilliant exploit of the British cavalry during the whole six years of the war.' He served with distinction in the early stages of the Peninsular War, but a family quarrel with the Wellesleys resulting from his elopement with Henry Wellesley's wife cost him his command. He was reinstated in time for Waterloo, where he lost a leg.

Augusta, Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. IN NAPOLEONIC DAYS: EXTRACTS FROM THE PRIVATE DIARY OF AUGUSTA, DUCHESS OF SAXE-COBURG-SAALFELD, QUEEN VICTORIA'S MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER 1806-1821. London John Murray 1941 First edition Very good 233pp, 4 plates, vg original cloth, faint ex-lib marks to spine. A vivid document of life in a minor German principality during the Napoleonic Wars. As ruler of her duchy during the French occupation and the wars of liberation, the author had frequent dealings with officers such as Lannes and Augereau regarding billeting, requisitions, conscription, etc., and her observations are often quite interesting. An excerpt, October 15, 1806. 'Sick at heart I left poor ravaged Saalfeld. Immediately behind the town we had to pass the battlefield [Jena] still strewn with the unburied bodies of Prussian and Saxon Hussars lying near their slaughtered horses. The road was crowded with all manner of French transport. All the villages we passed had been completely sacked and the inconsolable inhabitants stood weeping in front of their devastated homes, waiting hopelessly for fresh disasters to overtake them.' Scarce.

Becke, Maj. A.F. NAPOLEON AND WATERLOO: THE EMPEROR'S CAMPAIGN WITH THE ARMEE DU NORD, 1815. London Kegan Paul 1939 2nd (and best) edition 381pp, 5 folding maps. Fine in a worn and waterspotted dj. Tiny bit of waterspotting to margin of first few pages, not affecting text. A classic, by one of the most sympathetic British military historians: 'No other leader of any era compares with Napoleon for grandeur of intellect and military genius.' Becke's thesis that Waterloo was lost because Napoleon's powers were waning has been hotly debated ever since.

Blakeney, Robert. A BOY IN THE PENINSULAR WAR: THE SERVICES, ADVENTURES, AND EXPERIENCES OF ROBERT BLAKENEY. London Greenhill 1989 Facsimile of 1899 ed xviii+382pp. Spine very slightly sunned, o/w fine in dj. Blakeney served with the 28th regiment of foot from Corunna until the end of the war. At the storming of Badajoz: 'Gallant foes laughing at death met, fought, bled, and rolled upon the earth; and from the very earth destruction burst, for the exploding mines cast up friends and foes together, who in burning torture clashed and shrieked in the air. Partly burned they fell back into the inundating water, continually lighted by the incessant bursting of shells. Thus assailed by opposing elements, they made the horrid scene yet more horrid by shrieks uttered in wild despair, vainly struggling against a watery grave with limbs convulsed and quivering from the consuming fire.'

Bonaparte, Napoleon. NEW LETTERS OF NAPOLEON I, OMITTED FROM THE EDITION PUBLISHED UNDER THE AUSPICES OF NAPOLEON III. London Heinemann 1903 First English Edition Translated from the French by Lady Mary Loyd. xviii+380pp, 16pp publisher's adverts. VG original gilt and blindtooled cloth. Contains 545 letters expurgated from the official Correspondence, supposedly because they portrayed the Emperor in an unflattering light (as when he authorizes the use of torture in questioning suspects). They are indeed a remarkably candid view of Napoleon at work, and some of his remarks in them are clearly hasty and ill-considered. But to say that these letters tarnish his reputation is ridiculous.

'A fascinating portrayal of two extraordinary personalities, Evangeline Bruce's vivid narrative combines broad and insightful historical knowledge with the novelist's eye for detail and drama. As biography, Bruce beautifully places her subjects in the finely textured social and political world of late eighteenth- century France and makes this improbable marriage come alive as a passionate love affair and as a European event.'--Fred Kaplan, author of CHARLES DICKENS.
