London John Murray 1941 First edition Very good
233pp, 4 plates, vg original cloth, faint ex-lib marks to spine. A vivid document of life in a minor German principality during the Napoleonic Wars. As ruler of her duchy during the French occupation and the wars of liberation, the author had frequent dealings with officers such as Lannes and Augereau regarding billeting, requisitions, conscription, etc., and her observations are often quite interesting. An excerpt, October 15, 1806. 'Sick at heart I left poor ravaged Saalfeld. Immediately behind the town we had to pass the battlefield [Jena] still strewn with the unburied bodies of Prussian and Saxon Hussars lying near their slaughtered horses. The road was crowded with all manner of French transport. All the villages we passed had been completely sacked and the inconsolable inhabitants stood weeping in front of their devastated homes, waiting hopelessly for fresh disasters to overtake them.' Scarce.

London Greenhill 1989 Facsimile of 1899 ed
xviii+382pp. Spine very slightly sunned, o/w fine in dj. Blakeney served with the 28th regiment of foot from Corunna until the end of the war. At the storming of Badajoz: 'Gallant foes laughing at death met, fought, bled, and rolled upon the earth; and from the very earth destruction burst, for the exploding mines cast up friends and foes together, who in burning torture clashed and shrieked in the air. Partly burned they fell back into the inundating water, continually lighted by the incessant bursting of shells. Thus assailed by opposing elements, they made the horrid scene yet more horrid by shrieks uttered in wild despair, vainly struggling against a watery grave with limbs convulsed and quivering from the consuming fire.'

83 Bonaparte, Napoleon. NEW LETTERS OF NAPOLEON I, OMITTED FROM THE EDITION PUBLISHED UNDER THE AUSPICES OF NAPOLEON III.
London Heinemann 1903 First English Edition
Translated from the French by Lady Mary Loyd. xviii+380pp, 16pp publisher's adverts. VG original gilt and blindtooled cloth. Contains 545 letters expurgated from the official Correspondence, supposedly because they portrayed the Emperor in an unflattering light (as when he authorizes the use of torture in questioning suspects). They are indeed a remarkably candid view of Napoleon at work, and some of his remarks in them are clearly hasty and ill-considered. But to say that these letters tarnish his reputation is ridiculous.

86 Bonaparte, Napoleon. NAPOLEON'S LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT: A FACSIMILE EDITION OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT, TOGETHER WITH ITS CODICILS, APPENDED INVENTORIES, LETTERS AND INSTRUCTIONS, PRESERVED IN THE FRENCH NATIONAL ARCHIVES.
New York Paddington Press 1977 First English language edition
Folio 109pp, well illustrated. Fine in dj. Commentaries by Jean-Pierre Babelon and Suzanne D'Hurart. A fascinating human document. Napoleon rewards friends going all the way back to childhood, and offers justifications for many actions of his career. And there is a large bequest to Marcellin Marbot, whose memoirs Napoleon read at St. Helena. In true Corsican fashion, he also leaves 100,000 francs to Chatillon, who tried to murder Wellington during the English occupation of Paris.

London Golden Cockerel Press 1945 First Edition
4to. 2 vols: 423pp, 80pp. Original green cloth with gilt letters and designs. Limited edtion of 500 copies. A splendid example of fine printing by the legendary Golden Cockerel Press: printed on mould-made deckle-edged paper in Perpetua type with vignettes and designs by John Buckland. Edited by Somerset de Chair. Napoleon dictated seven volumes of jumbled reminiscences to Gourgaud and Montholon at St. Helena. De Chair has eliminated the redundancies, arranged them in chronological order, and reworked them into the first person. A 1992 trade edition, NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON, contains about a quarter the material present here. Scarce.
