As ruler of her duchy during the French occupation and the wars of liberation, the author had frequent dealings with officers such as Lannes and Augereau regarding billeting, requisitions, conscription, etc., and her observations are often quite interesting. An excerpt, October 15, 1806. 'Sick at heart I left poor ravaged Saalfeld. Immediately behind the town we had to pass the battlefield [Jena] still strewn with the unburied bodies of Prussian and Saxon Hussars lying near their slaughtered horses. The road was crowded with all manner of French transport. All the villages we passed had been completely sacked and the inconsolable inhabitants stood weeping in front of their devastated homes, waiting hopelessly for fresh disasters to overtake them.'
